MADERA, Calif. (KFSN) —
A standoff in Madera has ended with a suspect in custody. Police say 37-year-old Anthony Navarro threatened to shoot and kill officers while he was barricaded inside an apartment on Monterey Street and Almond Avenue.
The suspect was dragged out of an apartment police say he tried to set on fire. Police say Navarro started firing shots just after 6:45pm outside his apartment and then ran inside.
Cdr. Dino Lawson with the Madera Police Department said, “Officers came up. They surrounded the apartment. The suspect started breaking out windows and started threatening to shoot and kill officers.”
As officers were trying to coax the suspect out of his apartment who police say was acting erratically. Neighbors weren’t allowed to leave or enter the apartment complex. Neighbors say they heard negotiators including loved ones try to coax the suspect out.
Madera resident Brian West said, “We kept hearing ‘Anthony come out. Anthony we love you come out please.'”
After hours of trying to negotiate with Navarro, police say the suspect tried lighting the apartment on fire and ended the standoff.
Cdr. Dino Lawson explained, “He threw a pile of newspapers on an open flame. So it just created smoke, which was a benefit for us.”
Police say Navarro couldn’t breathe from the smoke in the apartment and was taken to a local hospital shortly after the standoff ended.
Police couldn’t tell us why Navarro was acting erratically and can’t confirm if drugs or alcohol were involved. But the suspect is wanted on two felony drug warrants out of Fresno and is currently on probation. He’ll be arrested for additional charges related to the standoff.
