MADERA COUNTY, Calif. (KFSN) —
Two people are dead after a crash north of Chowchilla on Friday, the California Highway Patrol has confirmed. The crash was reported shortly before 5 p.m. on northbound Highway 99’s Avenue 27 off-ramp.
Officers say a man driving a pickup truck was arrested on suspicion of DUI after the fatal crash. They say there are reports that the 65-year-old driver was seen leaving a bar. Investigators believe the truck was involved in a hit-and-run crash, then went through the median, went airborne and crashed into another truck while exiting the highway.
Two people in that second truck — a man and woman in their 20s from Merced — were pronounced dead at the scene. Their names have not been released.
