It was here at Highway 99 and Road 15 that the driver lost control getting off Highway 99 and went airborne.
The California Highway Patrol says that drunk driver hit two other vehicles before the fatal crash and just kept going.
CHP says the driver of a white Ford F-350 told officers he had left Farnesi’s Steakhouse off Highway 99 and had been drinking.
They received reports the 65-year-old male from Winton had hit two vehicles.
He took the Road 15 off ramp, left the roadway and hit a Toyota Tacoma, killing a man and woman in their late twenties from Merced.
“It did go airborne,” CHP officer Jude Dunbar says. “It went broadside and took off the roof. It went through a dirt center divider area and there was a little ramp which allowed it to go airborne and then took off the roof and most of the top part of the Tacoma.
The DUI driver was taken to Madera Community Hospital with minor injuries.
CHP is getting a warrant to obtain his blood alcohol level.
That driver will be charged with two counts of vehicular manslaughter with gross negligence, felony DUI and hit and run for the two other crashes.
Investigators have not released the names of the two people killed.
