Madera County Sheriff Jay Varney is touting a newly created position of Problem Oriented Policing sergeant after the man who filled the post solved a burglary at a Bass Lake-area school.
A spokesman said the sergeant, Larry Rich, was helping other deputies in a separate burglary investigation when he encountered Anthony Meents near Road 274 and Road 434 on Wednesday.
Rich found Meents had methamphetamine and a hypodermic needle. He then learned Meents was sought in the April 25 theft of a laptop from Oak Creek intermediate school. Rich took Meents into custody.
Varney said the position will allow the sergeant to have flexible assignments that will help solve community problems.
“This case is great proof that the new concept will work,” the sheriff said.
