The Position: Police Officer I – is the entry-level class in the Police Department. Under direction of an assigned supervisor, perform law enforcement and related services to safeguard the lives, property and constitutional rights of citizens in the City.

Upon appointment to Police Officer I, duties may include a wide variety of law enforcement assignments such as: patrol, traffic control, criminal and juvenile investigation, animal control calls, rendering emergency medical aid as a first responder, and radio communication. Job Requirements:

 Valid P.O.S.T. Basic Academy Certificate required, or proof of enrollment in a POST Academy with a letter of good standing or proof of completion.  Applicants who are not currently POST certified will need to provide proof of enrollment in a POST Basic Course Waiver Course/Examination process, or proof of submission to POST for Qualification Assessment for the Basic Course Waiver Course/Exam.  No felony convictions  U.S. Citizen or Resident Alien  21 years of age at the time of application  Possession of a valid California Driver’s License  Graduation from a high school or a GED with a minimum average score of 450 and a total score of not less than 2250  Successful completion of the department’s field training program within 12 weeks  Be in good physical condition  Weight in proportion for completion of physical agility test

Ability to: Think and act quickly in emergencies and to judge situations and people accurately; ability to work a variety of shifts, weekends, holidays as needed; and work in high stress, life-threatening environments.

Experience: Education: High school diploma or equivalent. (Possession of an Associate’s degree or Bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution is desirable) AND completion of P.O.S.T. basic academy or Module D/Level I training for police officers.

Licenses: Possession and maintenance of a valid Class C California Driver’s License; certificate of completion of P.O.S.T. Basic Academy; standard CPR and First Aid Certificate issued by the American Red Cross.

SELECTION PROCEDURE: Candidates must submit, by mail or hand deliver, a completed City of Chowchilla job application, supplemental questionnaire, and Post certificate or proof of enrollment in a POST Academy to be considered. Candidates considered best qualified based on the information provided will move forward in the examination process. The examination process may include a pre-qualifying background questionnaire, written examination, physical agility test and/or oral interview. Candidates passing all phases of the examination process will be placed on an eligible list for hiring consideration. Actual hire depends on success in the departmental selection process including selection interview, background investigation, polygraph, psychological evaluation and medical exam.

Vacations: Employees receive 12 days of vacation per year for the first five years of employment. This increases to a maximum of 22 days for 20+ years of employment in 5 year increments. Sick Leave: Employee receives 12 days of sick leave per year. Retirement: P.E.R.S. retirement plan. The City does not participate in Social Security. Insurance: The City pays a portion of the employee and dependent coverage of medical, dental and vision insurance.
