FRESNO, Calif. (KFSN) —
Two people from Madera are under arrest in connection with a massive brawl that broke out at a Sikh temple in Turlock.
Police arrested 51-year-old Balwinder Bagri Kaur and 47-year-old Gurdev Singh Friday.
About 300 people were attending service at Sikh temple Turlock when a brawl broke out last Sunday. Police believe 100 people were actually involved, including both men and women throwing punches. Officers also arrested a third person, 38-year-old Sandeep Singh, the man seen on video swinging a sword. “He basically picked up a sword, an article of faith, and assaulted an elderly person. Which cannot be tolerated in a house of worship,” said Harinder Toor, member.
According to members, the fight involved two big groups– the current temple leaders versus a group of newly emigrated members from India often considered to be traditionalists.
Members said Singh is one of the traditionalists and he’s been in trouble with the law before.
The mayor and chief of police are now holding meetings with the Sikh community to make sure it doesn’t happen again.
