Officer-involved shooting in Chowchillla | The Fresno Bee

The Madera County Sheriff’s Office is investigating a shooting by law enforcement officials in Chowchilla on Thursday that killed a man.

The shooting, which involved Chowchilla and California Highway Patrol officers, took place after a man charged officers with a knife, according to Lt. Bill Ward of the Madera County Sheriff’s Office, which is investigating.

Ward said the incident began when Chowchilla officers went to the 400 block of Alameda Avenue, near Fourth Street in response to a disturbance. There, they found a man who was siphoning diesel fuel out of a truck and lighting it on fire in a gutter. The man also threw a propane tank on the blaze.

Ward said the man was agitated and “waving knives around and not complying with officers’ commands.” CHP officers arrived to assist the Chowchilla officers, and Chowchilla firefighters were also on scene to deal with the fire.

Ward said the man had a cylindrical object in one hand and warned that he had a bomb. Officers attempted to subdue the man with electronic stun devices and a high-pressure fire hose.

When the man charged the officers with the knife, one Chowchilla and one CHP officer shot him with their firearms. The man died at the scene. No officers were injured.
