Man killed after confronting suspected marijuana growers on Madera County property, authorities say | abc30.com

A man was shot to death Monday after he confronted a group of men who were allegedly growing marijuana on his rural Madera County property, authorities said.

The shooting happened on a large property on Road 423 near Wortham Road, between Oakhurst and Bass Lake, around 7 p.m. The Madera County Sheriff’s Office says the residents discovered a marijuana grow on the edge of their property and confronted three suspects in the area.

An armed confrontation took place between three suspected growers and the residents of the property, and a 47-year-old male resident was killed after shots rang out.

“The residents here were aware it was being grown. They didn’t want the people growing here, and apparently with this evening’s altercation they ended up coming to violence over it,” said Jay Varney, Madera County Sheriff.

Deputies are still looking for three Hispanic men who took off in a bluish-green minivan.

As for the marijuana grow, an exact size is unclear at this time.
They say a mountain lion in the area has hindered their search, but so far they did find about 200 marijuana plants.
